Laura and I had quite the "exciting" trip home from Utah. (sorry, Dad, we know that you asked us to have a boring trip!) We left Sunday morning only 22 minutes behind "schedule" and that sort of set the tone for our entire trip. Every "schedule" we set seemed to be 22 minutes off!! We drove and drove our first day and stopped in a TINY town called Grand Island, NE... it was SO small. I called the front desk to find out where we could eat and the person I spoke to said, "Arby's and a truck stop named Grandma's something something." We chose Arby's. The second day we drove to Keokuk, Iowa and visited Nauvoo, IL. We arrived in Nauvoo around 5:22... they stopped giving tours at 5:00. So we went to the store, and back to the hotel for a soak in the hot tub and some t.v. It was good to relax. The next morning we headed back to Nauvoo and took the horse-pulled wagon tour around old Nauvoo. Like the rest of the "pioneer sites" we felt of their Spirits and could see the Lord's hand not only in their lives, but also in our own. Next we headed over to Carthage Jail where the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum were murdered. Laura and I were the only ones with the missionary showing us everything which was excellent because we were able to take our time and really feel the spirit that is there. We sat in and listened to a narrative in the room where the Prophet was shot and saw the bullet holes in the door from where the mob came in to kill them. One would think that this would be a sad experience, but truthfully, it was one of the more peaceful experiences I have ever had. I know with all of my heart, mind and soul that Joseph Smith, Jr. was a Prophet of God. I KNOW that it was through him the Lord was able to re-establish His church on the earth. I am so thankful that Laura and I were able to go there and renew our testimonies of him.
After our visit to Carthage we headed home. There was much craziness to be had. We saw beautiful sites, laughed A LOT, and found out how to change wiper blades from two fellas at a K-mart. I am so thankful for the time that I had with Laura. She is such a sweet, strong person and I am blessed to have her in my life. I love you Aunt Tushy Tushy! Thanks for the trip!
